Cosmetic Eyelift Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Who is a candidate for an eyelift (Smartlift Eyelift)?

A candidate for an eyelift is someone who notices that his or her appearance has changed significantly with age. This person notices “family resemblances” of puffy eyelids, pouchy lower lids and drooping skin over the eyes. Certain lifestyles such as smoking, sun worshipping, excessive weight gain, or high stress are more likely to make droopy lids appear. People from Northern or Western European descent tend to seek out this procedure at a younger age than their more darkly pigmented counterparts. Unfortunately, we do all age, so any person that wants to look younger and fresher without making drastic “plastic” changes to their face will eventually seek out an eyelift.

Dr. Prasad has pioneered a particular technique known as the “Smartlift Eyelift” technique which involves minimal incisions, local anesthesia and very natural results.

What is a Smartlift Eyelift?

We choose to refer to our eyelifts as SmartLift eyelifts because we believe that there is an intelligent and rational improvement for every type of cosmetic surgery. Our client base consists of people with very active lifestyles and diverse interests. They are not interested in getting any type of elective surgery that would significantly slow them down while they wait to recover. The Smartlift Eyelift differs from traditional eyelifts because it involves minimal risk, minimal anesthesia and maximal results.

Dr. Prasad has developed a standardized Smartlift System to properly classify a person’s eyelids on the basis of gender, age, ethnic background and skin condition. This analysis allows him to select the right approach that is properly personalized to an individual patient’s eyelift (blepharoplasty). However, this scientific study alone does not guarantee results. An artistic approach with a fine sense of balance and composition is as crucial to the beauty of the results as thorough study. The Smartlift System is a useful tool but the personalized artistic touch is what make all the difference when you are choosing the right cosmetic surgeon. It is this fortuitous combination that ensures that Dr. Prasad consistently delivers desired results to his patients.

Before Blepharoplasty Surgery   This young 34 year old woman had been plagued with lower lid bulges that ran in her family.
After Blepharoplasty Surgery   The Smartlift eyelift gave her back her stunning eyes while preserving their unique almond shape.

When analyzing a patient’s eyes before performing an eyelift, it is important to appreciate the shape and quality of the eyes so that the face’s individuality is maintained.

Local anesthesia means that the downtime after the procedure is much less than an eyelift performed under general anesthesia. In addition, general anesthesia has more attendant risks than local anesthesia, so generally speaking, the SmartLift approach is certainly a safer option. Other reasons for the reduced downtime that is associated with the Smartlift Eyelift have to do with the procedure itself. The techniques used by Dr. Prasad and the particular details related to the immediate aftercare also contribute to a shorter downtime and a faster healing time overall.

What are the newest advances available in Eyelifts today?

There are many new and exciting options available to patients who thoroughly research their options for eyelifts. One of the most significant factors to note when you are learning about the market is to understand all of the variations of eyelifts that exist and decide which variation is best for you. Dr. Prasad has over 15 years of experience with performing eyelifts and has thoroughly studied and analyzed this procedure in order to develop his Smartlift Eyelift. This systematic approach allows him to consistently satisfy his patients’ cosmetic goals.

Before Cosmetic Eye Surgery   This 56 year old woman had always been known for her beautiful blue eyes. The lower lid bulges and the sagging upper eyelids that developed with age had detracted from her beauty.
After Cosmetic Eye Surgery   Eliminating the lower lid bulges and lifting the upper eyelids gave her back the eyes from her youth and some well earned admiration of her eyes.

How are the surgical approaches for Upper and Lower eyelids different?

Upper lid eyelifts are performed using a small incision that is hidden in the crease of the upper eyelid. The scar usually heals extremely well and is difficult for others to see even when your eyes are closed.

An experienced surgeon such as Dr. Prasad combines his expertise and the latest surgical techniques to provide optimal results for his patients.

Before Blepharoplasty Surgery   This 43 year old woman has sagging upper eyelids which give her a perpetual frown.
After Blepharoplasty Surgery   After a blepharoplasty (eyelift), her eyes are much more expressive and communicate her positive outlook.
Before Cosmetic Eye Surgery   This young 35 year old woman was frustrated by the sagging upper eyelids that developed at a young age since it runs in her family. Putting on eyeshadow was becoming a chore.
After Cosmetic Eye Surgery   After her Smartlift eyelift, she has a subtle yet brighter enhancement of her eyes which give her a younger, fresher and more alert appearance.

Lower lid blepharoplasties are used to eliminate puffiness and heavy bags under the eyes. Lower lifts have two techniques: Traditional and Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty.

1. Traditional (transcutaneous) blepharoplasty (lower lift)

Traditional blepharoplasty is used in patients with thin, papery, and fair skin and many folds and wrinkles under the eyelids. The incision is made just below the margin of the lower eyelids and is very well hidden.

2. Transconjunctival blepharoplasty

This is the most modern and popular type of lower eyelid surgery available. Many people are candidates for this type of surgery because they have firm skin under their eyelids and minimal folds. This technique involves an incision on the inside of the lower eyelid and leaves no visible scar. This procedure is the most desirable type of lower eyelid surgery because it heals very well and yields very natural results. If there are only a few wrinkles under the eyes, a Caucasian person may be a candidate for a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. For this reason, a Caucasian individual may want to seek cosmetic eyelid surgery at a younger age as compared to his peers from other ethnic backgrounds.

People of Mediterranean background and people with darker skin along the spectrum have a thicker dermis or underlying elastic structure supporting their skin. Often, people with dark skin have a tendency to heal with keloids, which are raised and fleshy scars, whenever the outer surface of the skin is cut. For these reasons, this population is better suited to the inner lower eyelid approach or transconjunctival blepharoplasty.

Before Blepharoplasty Surgery   This 37 year old woman looked older than her younger cousins due to the lower lid bulging that she inherited from one of her parents.
After Blepharoplasty Surgery   After a lower lid blepharoplasty performed from behind her eyelids, her eyes make her look younger than her age.
Before Cosmetic Eye Surgery
This is a 43 year old female with a history of allergies that contributed to the puffiness under her eyes from chronic rubbing.
After Cosmetic Eye Surgery   In this side view, the reduction of the lower lid puffiness is easily appreciated. Transconjunctival eyelid surgery is performed from behind the eyelid and leaves no scar.

How do I know whether I am the right age to get a Smartlift Eyelift?

There is no such thing as the right age for an eyelift or for any type of cosmetic surgery. The best answer to this question is for you to decide whether you feel the need to change your appearance. As you browse through these patients’ stories, remember that no one should ever convince you to get cosmetic surgery.

As for age itself, our patients’ ages vary significantly. Some are as young as 14 and as old as 100. For many people, the signs of aging can develop at a certain age for genetic reasons. We have a number of patients who developed large bags under their eyes in their late teens or early 20’s. Some people are blessed with firm skin and lead very healthy lifestyles and don’t feel that they want cosmetic surgery until they are significantly older. In general, people with a complexion of olive and darker, have firmer skin with more elasticity. They tend to have cosmetic surgery at an older age.
Ultimately, the decision to have cosmetic surgery is a highly personal choice and will depend on your own cosmetic goals.

Before Blepharoplasty Surgery   This 50 year old stockbroker felt that people thought she was “washed up and tired” and that she was missing out on business opportunities.
After Blepharoplasty Surgery   Her lower lid eyelift and her upper lid eyelift, gave her a more alert and enthusiastic appearance.
Although the age of our patients vary widely, those who get an eyelift when the sagging first bothers them, are more likely to have the most youthful looking results.
Before Cosmetic Eye Surgery   This 35 year old man had just re-entered the dating scene and wanted to rejuvenate his looks so that he would not feel self-conscious.
After Cosmetic Eye Surgery   His lower lid blepharoplasty significantly refreshed his appearance and his confidence was greatly restored.
