How Facial Paralysis May Occur
Facial paralysis occurs when the facial nerve is damaged. The damage may be caused by factors such as trauma, infection or tumor. Facial nerve palsy, or Bell's Palsy, is a temporary condition that may persist after the resection of Acoustic Neuroma (a benign growth that interferes with balance and hearing).Trauma from motor vehicle accidents or skull injuries can also cause facial nerve palsy. If the condition persists past six months, the damage may be permanent. In that case, it is no longer referred to as facial nerve palsy or Bell's Palsy; it has become facial paralysis, and it is treatable.

This 56 year old male had been suffering from Bell's Palsy, which had partially resolved one year prior to coming to see Dr. Prasad. He complained of constant tearing, particularly when it was windy and was getting irritation of his skin from using tape to keep his eye closed.
